Winter Photo Tips

When photographing a snow scene the snow will often times appear blue and dark. This is due to the camera's auto exposure and white balance being fooled by the bright snow.

Most cameras have a method of manually setting the white balance. Change the white balance until the snow is white on your LCD camera screen. After setting white balance it may be necessary to lighten the image by using the plus minus exposure control that is found on most digital cameras. For snow scenes you want to go on the plus side.

Your can try different plus settings to get the exposure that looks the best. This will help you obtain better exposure when photographing people or pets against a snow background. Another method is to turn on your flash to lighten the subject. If you are within your usable flash range this will help to give the subject the correct exposure.

For you lucky people that don't have snow you can also use this exposure technique when photographing a subject against a white background, water or sand.  Just remember when you are done using the plus minus control to return it to the normal 0 position.
